CRMEX 2014 2nd Workshop on Practical Experiences with CIDOC CRM and its Extensions

2014/09/12

The CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CIDOC CRM) is a conceptual model and ontology with a fundamental role in many data integration efforts in the Cultural Heritage (CH) and Digital Libraries domain. The CIDOC CRM is intended to promote a shared understanding of cultural heritage information by providing a common and extensible semantic framework that any cultural heritage information can be mapped to. As an international standard (ISO 21127:2006), the reference models serves as an authoritative common language for domain experts and implementers formulating requirements for information systems and is a guide for good practice of conceptual modeling. It provides the “semantic glue” needed to mediate, merge and integrate different sources of cultural heritage information, such as that published by museums, libraries and archives.

Worldwide there is a large and growing community involved in CRM-related development and research and the purpose of this workshop is to be a forum for presenting and discussing on-going development and novel research, sharing knowledge and best practice, as well as inspire new research, development, and cooperation. An important goal of the workshop is to describe and showcase systems using CRM at their core, exchange experience about the practical use of CRM, describe difficulties for the practical application of CRM, and share approaches for overcoming such difficulties.

The model has spawned various CRM-compliant models, adaptations and extensions, such as:

  • FRBRoo – a formal ontology for bibliographic information based on the Functional Requirements of Bibliographic Records
  • CRM Digitization (CRMdig) for digitization and provenance
  • CRM for English Heritage (CRMEH) for archaeology
  • British Museum Ontology (BMO) for museum objects
  • Sharing Ancient Wisdoms (SAWS) for medieval gnomologia (collections of wise sayings)
  • PRESSoo, a FRBRoo extension for serial publications
  • A number of data other models, while not CRM-compliant, have been influenced by the CRM, such as the Europeana Data Model – EDM.

The overall objective of the workshop is to facilitate and stimulate discussions, development and research related to CIDOC CRM applications and extension.
