I met Nick Poole few years ago in Athens. We were at a CIDOC conference (my first time at CIDOC) which turned out to be special because it defined some important professional and academic issues that were worrying me at that time.

Nick was there to present, as CEO of Collections Trust, the internationalisation project of SPECTRUM (the collections management standard that you’ve all downloaded here in Portuguese) that would transform what was an UK museum standard used by a great amount of museums and museum professionals around the world, in a true international community standard and a reference for museum collections documentation and management. I had the pleasure of meeting him at the Museum of Islamic Art of the Benaki Museum terrace, at one of the (fabulous) social activities organized by the conference organization (see photo), where we had a very pleasant conversation about museums, collections, Greece, the United Kingdom and Portugal, among many others subjects.

I ended up doing a doctorate about SPECTRUM for believing that this new openness by Collections Trust for the standard would allow it to become an excellent aid for organizing procedures in museums. I wasn’t wrong and since then I’ve always count, without exception, with Nick support to resolve questions, gather information about SPECTRUM or Collections Trust and MDA history and about many more things.

A few years later we had the opportunity to invite Nick as keynote speaker for the 8th Sistemas do Futuro User’s Meeting, when he also signed, in behalf of Collections Trust, the protocol with “Museu da Ciência da Universidade de Coimbra” that established the SPECTRUM license for the Portuguese territory. At that time, because of the flight delay we had the opportunity to talk in a late trip between Porto and Coimbra about almost everything, which gave me the opportunity to know the him better. Of course the beers in OpenCulture and caipirinhas in Brazil, where we also found, were also opportunities to know each other and realize the excellent professional and the great person Nick is.

Yesterday, when I read at the Collections Trust newsletter that Nick is leaving office as Collections Trust CEO to embrace a new (and important) professional challenge at CILIP, I felt a brief distress. I know that Collections Trust will manage this smoothly, but they will lost a key person in the institution recent years dynamics. By other hand I know that Nick leaves a stronger and healthier institution that will, for sure, continue the great work of these recent years (they have a lot of very good professionals over there).

Nick will embrace a new professional challenge and he will be certainly successful in it, but I couldn’t let this moment pass without sending a huge thank you to Nick for everything!

Hope to see you soon for a pint, ok Nick?
